Open Email Links on Web Pages with Gmail or Yahoo Mail

There’s a new very useful feature in Firefox 3.0.3 that enables you to open mailto: links on web pages in the email program of your choice.

For instance, you may open email links directly inside Gmail, Yahoo! Mail or you could configure mailto link with desktop based email clients like Outlook, Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.

To access this option, go to the "Tools" menu, click "Options", select the "Applications" tab and then search for "mailto" in the Content Type column.

Now when you click an email link on a web page, it will directly open a "Compose New Mail" window of Gmail or Yahoo! irrespective of what your default email client is.

Hitwise today released their October stats for the 20 most popular websites based on traffic to that domain. The list includes the top four email websites as well and is therefore a good way to measure their relatively popularity among Internet users.

Yahoo Mail leads with 4.7% share (out of the whole Internet traffic in US) followed by Windows Live Mail (1.94%) and Google Gmail at 0.8%.

Though the rankings are almost consistent with Comscore figures that were released exactly an year ago, there are some factors that I am not sure are considered in this report:

1. Google offers free POP and IMAP access so some portion of their users may not be checking emails on the web thus reducing traffic to that domain. Windows Live Mail too offers POP access via the Outlook connecter while Yahoo! provides that through Zimbra.

2. A lot of people use Gmail with Google Apps so they are visiting google.com/a/domain.com instead of the default gmail.com domain thus contributing traffic to the main Google domain (mail.google.com) instead of the Gmail domain.

Dengan menggunakan berita kejadian terkini, misalnya perjalanan Obama ke Eropa, kampanye kepresidenan Amerika Serikat, dan antisipasi Olimpiade yang dimulai pada 8 Agustus di China, spammer terus membuat email spam yang menggemparkan untuk memikat pengguna agar membukanya.




Contoh terbaru dari serangan email spam jenis ini, penerima email membuka salah satu dari email ini, kemudian disuruh untuk meng-klik suatu link yang berisi malware. Spam jahat ini seringkali dibuat untuk menginfeksi komputer lain dengan virus dan Trojan.
 


Pada contoh observasi yang dilakukan Symantec selama Juli 2008, web pemerintahan seringkali dibajak oleh hacker untuk menaruh malware pada serangan ini. Penggunaan web pemerintahan seringkali menyulitkan untuk mencari jejak dari pembajak ini.

Spammer mengecoh pengguna internet dengan pesan spam yang berisi Trojan virus yang mengklaim bahwa Perang Dunia III telah dimulai setelah serangan US ke Iran. Tanda buruk ini telah terdeteksi sebagai Trojan.Peacomm oleh Symantec AV.


Tercatat email-email bertajuk: "Perang Dunia Ketiga telah Dimulai", "Tentara Amerika Menduduki Iran", atau "Negosiasi antara Amerika Serikat dan Iran berakhir dengan perang" ternyata berisi gambar video sebuah letusan bom yang bila diklik akan tertuju ke Trojan.



Makanan Super dan Cara Manghabiskan Uang dengan Cepat:
Tren spam seringkali meniru apa yang terjadi di budaya popular. Saat ini semua yang dialami tidak jelas dengan seringnya dijumpai berita tentang makanan super.

Pesan spam ini mengindikasikan bahwa produk makanan tersebut bisa dicoba dengan gratis. Dengan mendaftar pada penawaran tersebut, penerima email setuju untuk membayar USD74,95 per bulan ke rekening mereka. Untuk mencoba dan mendapat pesan dari penyaring spam, setiap pesan mengandung ratusan kata acak yang tersembunyi pada tag html.


Dengan demikian, tujuan dari pesan spam jenis ini adalah untuk mengumpulkan data pribadi penerima email yang percaya. Spammer menggunakan informasi ini untuk kampanye spam yang akan datang, atau juga menjual informasi ini ke kelompok lain.

Google Using TinyURL Service for Shortening URLs in SMS Search?

When you perform a web search on mobile phone using Google SMS, the SMS text message you get back from Google has two parts - web search results and a short URL that redirects to the relevant Google search page.

For instance, Google sent an SMS message with this short URL - m.google.com/u/xva9Ot - for a search query like "Global Warming."





Now if we to use the services of TinyURL for converting that same Google page into a shorter URL, the resulting address would be something like this - tinyurl.com/6xbo7q.

Noticed a similarity ? The redirection code generated by TinyURL (6xbo7q) and Google SMS search (xva90t) have six characters each.

Since this can just be a coincidence, let’s look at the HTTP Response generated by Google that clearly says "tinyurl_server."

Google is either using TinyURL service for generating short URLs or there’s another possibility - they may have developed something similar in-house but gave it the same name "tinyurl."

New Google Search Interface Looks More Useful - See Screenshots

Google is testing a new search layout that lets users decide if they would like to see longer text excerpts, dates, places and even images inside regular search pages.

You also have the option to limit Google search results to fresh pages only (like show pages created since last month) without using the "Advance Search Page".



To start with, users are presented with a "Search Options" link that brings up a list of relevant options in the right sidebar. All screenshots are more or less self-explanatory.

1. Show pages created in the past month.

2. Show Search Snippets with Longer Text - this may also be a blessing for screen scrappers who make websites using content from Google Search pages.

3. Show Dates & Places in Search Results Snippets - If Google can recognize any content in the web page that looks like a date or a place, it will be show in the search pages while the regular content is shown in light color.

4. Show both Images & Text from Web Pages - This may a good option when search for images galleries on Google. You can do something in Google Image Search using the site: operator but here, the text snippets and images appear side by side.

How to Make Videos for Flickr From Your Photos

Flickr Pro members can now upload videos along with photos. Flickr support most video formats (FLV ?) but the duration of each clip should be 90 seconds or less - you can upload longer videos as well (up to 150 MB) but the system will truncate anything that’s after the 90 second mark.

Flickr is perfect for sharing short family videos that you have captured with a digital still camera or your mobile phone. It’s a no-brainer that Windows Live Gallery and Flickr Uploader will get upgraded soon so you can push both videos and still photos from the camera to your online Flickr account in one shot.

The level of spam should be negligible since video hosting is only available to Pro members who have actually used their Credit Card to buy a Flickr account. Also expect to find lot of screencast videos on Flickr once screen recording apps like Jing and SnagIt upgrade their output options.







Another important point - though Flickr allows you to upload photos not meant for kids, your videos should be G-Rated - content that may be unsuitable for children or grandmother are not permitted on Flickr videos.

Yahoo! will probably introduce video editing in Flickr via Jumpcut (an online video editor) just like the way you edit still images in Flickr using the Picnik editor.





Am not sure when that integration will happen but if you already have a bunch of photos that you want to upload to Flickr as a video slideshow, here are some good options:

1. Windows Movie Maker - Included by default in Windows XP and Vista. Drag a bunch of photos, add transitions, sounds and output your photos as a video file.

2. Microsoft Photostory - If you are on Windows XP, this is the best bet. This software can make your still photos look like a real video - you an also create your own music loops inside Photostory.

3. Pinnacle VideoSpin - I somehow find Video Spin a much better alternative to Movie Maker because it supports more 2D photo transitions and has a built-in title editor normally seen only in expensive video editing software.

4. Picasa - Yes, this free image editing software from Google can make movies of your favorite photos - select the pictures, adjust the time delay and render - you movie is now ready for uploading onto Flickr. Thanks Arpit.

Upload Photos from Web Pages to Flickr Directly

Say you come across an interesting photograph or screenshot image on Wikipedia that you would like to save in your Flickr account. How would you do this ?

Shiyan has developed a simple Flickr Uploadr for Firefox that lets you send web pictures directly to your Flickr account without you having to download that image to the hard-drive.

Image attribution can be a issue here but it’s also useful if you like to backup photos from places like Picasa, PhotoBucket, Facebook, etc to Flickr.

The add-in is Firefox only but there’s something similar for desktop in the form of Flickr Uploadr (video version here).





This will adds a "Send to Flickr" command to the contextual menu and lets you upload desktop pictures to the web with a simple right click.
